Kent Richardson.:.:Trombonist

About

Kent Richardson has been playing trombone for over 12 years. It was the first instrument he played when he began in sixth grade and since that time he has grown in his respect and appreciation for the instrument. You can read his story below.

Shawnee Middle School

During middle school, Kent struggled playing the trombone because his arms were too short (and he didn't practice very much). He was always second chair and thought that band class was a good time to joke around with his buddies while the director worked with the flutes and clarinets. He did luck out and make the All State Orchestra (which meant more time to mess around). During the spring concert of his eighth grade year, the concert band played a jazz piece entitled "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" and Kent played his first improvised solo (besides the one's he had played in the laundry room at his house). This was the start of something big.

Northrop High School

Naturally, Kent joined the marching band in high school. During his freshman year, he was split between doing marching band and playing soccer. In time, he realized that he wasn't that great at soccer, and that the people in band were way cooler. He worked hard at marching and memorizing his music and trying to impress the girls (2 out of 3 ain't bad).

In high school Kent was very motivated to get involved in all of the bands. He auditioned for the top concert band, jazz band, orchestra, and pep band. He even did the show choir back up band for a couple of years. While he enjoyed playing trombone every chance he could get, he found his true home in the jazz band. There was something about the energy, drive, and freedom of this music that inspired him. (The jazz band also got to get out of school to go play cool concerts in downtown Indianapolis and perform with guest artists). Kent decided during his senior year that he would like to study music in college. There was no turning back now.

Ball State University

Kent attended Ball State University where he studied Music Education and trombone with Dr. John Seidel. He performed in the Symphony Band under the direction of Dr. Christian Zembower, the Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Thomas Caneva , and jazz ensemble under the direction of Mr. Larry McWilliams. He also did a jazz combo and brass quintet on and off. His most enjoyable group to play with was a trombone quartet. They did not perform very much but they had a great time rehearsing together. See the performances page for more detailed information on his experiences in these ensembles.
